SHOULDER TATTOOS

The shoulder ages slowly — it is covered most of the time and takes little wear. Its problem is geometry. This is one of the most three-dimensional surfaces on the body, curving over the top of the joint and away on every side, so a flat drawing applied here loses parts of itself to angles nobody looks from.

THE GEOMETRY PROBLEM, SPECIFICALLY

A shoulder is closer to a sphere than a plane. Put a circle on it and the circle becomes an ellipse from every viewing position except one. Put a symmetrical design on it and the symmetry only exists from directly above. This is not a reason to avoid the area — it is a reason to design for it rather than on it. Artists who work shoulders well do two things: they choose compositions with a natural flow direction, so the eye travels along the curve instead of trying to see the whole shape at once, and they place the stencil with you standing, then check it from four angles before anything permanent happens. If a stencil has only been looked at from the front, it has not been checked.

HOW THE JOINT MOVES

The shoulder has the largest range of motion of any joint you have, and the skin over it accommodates that by sliding and folding rather than stretching much. In practice that means the ink is stable — the drawing does not get pulled out of proportion the way it can on a thigh — but the surface you tattooed flat will fold in use. A design with long unbroken straight lines across the top of the deltoid will show that folding more than one built from shorter elements or organic shapes. It is a subtle effect and most people never notice it on their own tattoo, but it is the reason hard geometric grids are less common here than on flatter ground.

WHAT FITS, AND THE CAP-SLEEVE TRAP

Rounded, flowing subjects suit the area: florals that follow the curve, mandalas placed on the cap of the shoulder where the roundness becomes part of the design, animal and figure work oriented along the arm. Traditional shoulder caps exist because they solve the geometry by embracing it. The trap is the half-measure — a piece sized as if it will become a cap sleeve but placed as a standalone, which tends to read as unfinished from the moment it heals. Decide which one you are getting. A standalone shoulder piece wants a clear edge and a composition that resolves; a cap is designed to continue.

PAIN AND SUN

Our coarse band here is Medium. The top of the shoulder is comfortable — muscle underneath, no bone close to the surface. It gets sharper as you move back toward the shoulder blade and in toward the collarbone, where bone sits close under thin skin. Sun exposure is moderate and seasonal rather than constant: covered under most clothing, fully exposed in a vest or at a beach, which is enough over years to matter if the piece uses pale colour.

SIZE, TIME AND HEALING

A shoulder cap sits comfortably at 15 to 20cm across; a standalone piece on the outer deltoid usually reads best between 10 and 15cm. Most take 3 to 5 hours in one sitting. Healing takes 2 weeks for the surface and about 6 weeks to fully settle, and the specific nuisance here is clothing: a bag strap, a seatbelt and a backpack all cross this exact spot, so plan on carrying nothing on that shoulder for 14 days. Side-sleeping on a fresh shoulder piece is uncomfortable for the first 3 or 4 nights.

ASK YOUR ARTIST

  • Can we check this stencil from the front, the side, the back and from above?
  • Is this a standalone piece with a resolved edge, or the start of a cap sleeve?
  • Does the composition follow the curve, or is it fighting it?
  • Are there long straight lines here that will show the fold when I move?
